Irish Football Association’s Greatest Ever Team

The debate will take the form of nine 7 day individual polls in the following sequence: Goalkeeper, Right Back, Centre Back, Left Back, Right Midfield, Centre Midfield, Left Midfield, Striker & Manager.

Players that top their respective polls will be placed in the starting eleven with the runner-up selected on the substitutes bench.  The Central Defenders, Central Midfielders and Strikers positions will be selected with the top two players selected for the starting eleven and the third placed player becoming the substitute.

Players who finish tied on votes will be seperated by caps except for the strikers who will be seperated by goals scored.  Managers will be seperated by win percentage.

Due to the changing tactical aspects of football from the rigid WM in the early years to the dynamic modern formations, players true positions have become blurred. We have tried our best to accomodate players in their natural positions within a modern day 4-4-2 formation.  Some of you may disagree with some choices for example what was George Best’s natural position, but that is why this is a debate!

Please remember to think outside the box and not only choose the player that you have grown up watching, but read the player synopsis and follow the links to the excellent Northern Ireland Footballing Greats website to learn more on each player.

A very good and interesting poll and I would agree about 95% with it. I have been watching Northern Ireland since 1958 ( 3-3 v England ) until the present day. 200 games in total and I hope lots more. OWC
